A Local Look at Character, Courage, and Community
If you’ve ever wondered what makes this veteran-owned martial arts school in Bellevue so special, you’ll find your answer at American Academies of Martial Arts.
During my recent visit, I sat down with owner Mark Goblowsky, a U.S. Air Force veteran who has spent nearly four decades teaching Kung Fu and character development to families across the Omaha metro. His story is one of service, discipline, and transformation, both on and off the mat.

From Military Service to Martial Arts Mastery
Mark’s journey began with a childhood fascination for the classic TV series Kung Fu.
“He was powerful but peaceful,” Mark recalled. “I wanted that balance.”
Years later, while stationed overseas, Mark began studying Kung Fu seriously. By 1987, he was training daily, and he hasn’t stopped since.
After returning home, he opened a small school in Bellevue so he could continue his studies and share the same lessons that shaped his life.
Today, that same veteran-owned martial arts school in Bellevue has grown to nearly 100 students, ranging from preschoolers to adults in their seventies, all working toward excellence through effort over time.
What Makes Kung Fu Different
Kung Fu literally means hard work over time. A concept that resonates far beyond the dojo.
On the back wall of the school, words like modesty, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit remind students that they’re training not only their bodies but also their character.
“We’re not just teaching punches and kicks,” Mark said. “We’re teaching people to become better versions of themselves.”
That mindset shows in every class. Parents see confidence growing. Adults find focus and calm. And everyone leaves with a stronger sense of who they are.
Josh’s Story: A Lesson in Perseverance
Mark’s son, Josh Goblowsky, has been part of the school since he was born. At just three years old, he survived a devastating hit-and-run accident involving two semi-trucks. The crash left him with a traumatic brain injury, but not without hope.
Through Kung Fu, Josh found a path forward. He’s now the author of Josh’s World and Josh’s Friends, two inspiring children’s books about friendship, courage, and acceptance.
“Every day here is about building people up,” Mark said. “Josh reminds us what perseverance really looks like.”
Josh’s books are available on Amazon, and you can often find him encouraging students and cheering them on at the school.
