In 1948, the base officially transitioned from the Army to the newly formed U.S. Air Force and became Offutt Air Force Base, later serving as headquarters for the Strategic Air Command. The 55th Wing first arrived in 1966 and was permanently assigned to Offutt in 1991.

Buying tends to make sense if you're looking at a longer assignment, want to put your VA loan benefit to work, or would rather build equity than hand a landlord a rent check every month. Home prices near Offutt are still relatively approachable compared to a lot of duty stations, which gives military buyers real buying power here.
Renting can be the smarter call if your timeline is uncertain, you're brand new to the area, or you want a season to figure out which neighborhood actually fits before you commit.
I've also worked with families who bought near Offutt, lived in the home during their tour, then converted it to a rental at their next PCS. Yes. With a copy of your PCS orders, you can buy before you arrive. VA loans typically close in 30 to 45 days, so start about two months before you want to move in.
