One of the first questions I get from families moving to Omaha — especially military families PCSing to Offutt AFB — isn’t about schools or commute times. It’s “Where do we buy groceries?” It makes sense. Once the boxes are in the house, the very next errand is stocking the fridge, and you want to know which stores are worth the drive.
The good news: the Omaha metro has no shortage of options, from Midwest favorites like Hy-Vee and Fareway to warehouse clubs, specialty grocers, international markets, and the commissary on base. Here’s my rundown of where locals actually shop, what each store does best, and what’s coming soon.

Offutt AFB Commissary
If you have base access, the Offutt Commissary is going to be a regular stop. Shopping is open to anyone with a valid military ID card, eligible VA benefit holders, and dependents, and the savings over off-base stores add up quickly for a family.
Address: 101 Meyer Ave, Offutt AFB, NE 68113 Phone: 402-938-0575 Hours: Sunday 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; Monday–Wednesday 9 a.m.–6 p.m.; Thursday–Friday 8 a.m.–7 p.m.; Saturday 8 a.m.–6 p.m.
The commissary also offers Click2Go online ordering with curbside pickup, which is a lifesaver during the first few weeks when you’re juggling in-processing, house hunting and kids. The Base Exchange (BX) is right next door at 106 Meyer Ave, so you can knock out both trips at once. Hours change around holidays, so check the commissary’s page before you go.
New to the base? Read my Offutt AFB gate access and traffic guide and my guide to Offutt AFB amenities and family support facilities before your first visit. Shopping off base? Many local businesses offer military discounts in Omaha, too.
Hy-Vee
If you’re moving here from the coasts or the South, you may never have heard of Hy-Vee — but you’ll know it well within a month. It’s an employee-owned Midwest chain, and Omaha has about a dozen locations spread across the metro, plus stores in Bellevue, Papillion, La Vista and Gretna.
Hy-Vee is known for clean stores, friendly service, solid store brands and a little bit of everything under one roof: pharmacy, floral, a full bakery and deli, wine and spirits, and in many locations a sit-down food area. Prices can run higher than discount grocers, but the convenience is hard to beat.
The standout is the Gretna Hy-Vee off Highway 370 — at 135,000 square feet, it’s the largest Hy-Vee in the company. It has a full food hall with several in-store restaurants (including Wahlburgers), a pub with 32 beer taps and a patio, a walk-in wine room and humidor, and a convenience store and online-order pickup center next door. It’s worth the trip even if you live in Bellevue.
Hy-Vee also offers Aisles Online pickup and delivery, plus fuel discounts at Hy-Vee gas stations through its rewards program.
Baker’s Supermarkets (Kroger)
Baker’s has been an Omaha grocery staple for generations. Kroger bought the chain in 2004 but kept the Baker’s name because locals were so loyal to it. If you’ve shopped at Kroger, King Soopers, Fry’s or Dillons, you’ll feel right at home — and your Kroger digital coupons and fuel points work here too.
Baker’s is expanding in a big way on the west side:
- Baker’s Marketplace at 204th & Q (5010 S 205th St) — a 123,000-square-foot store with a fuel center, roughly 55,000 square feet bigger than a typical Baker’s, scheduled to open in late 2026.
- Baker’s Marketplace at 182nd & West Maple (18303 Evans St) — broke ground in July 2026 and is planned to open in 2027.
Fareway
Fareway is an Iowa-based grocer with a small Omaha-area footprint — locations in Omaha, Papillion and Gretna — but a big reputation for one thing: its meat counter. The butchers will cut to order, and many locals swear by Fareway for steaks, roasts and burger patties. There’s also a standalone Fareway Meat Market at 90th & Center.
Stores are smaller and close earlier than most chains, so plan accordingly.
Family Fare
Family Fare is a neighborhood grocery chain with several locations around the metro, including two that are convenient for Sarpy County families:
- Bellevue: 1510 Harlan Dr, Bellevue, NE 68005
- Papillion: 1230 N Washington St, Papillion, NE 68046
It’s a solid choice for a quick, easy grocery run without the size of a superstore.
Super Saver
Super Saver is a Nebraska-owned grocer from Lincoln-based B&R Stores, known for low everyday prices and beef cut fresh in the store daily. Its Millard store at 144th & Stony Brook is one of the largest in the chain, and there’s a second metro location in Council Bluffs.
Address: 14591 Stony Brook Blvd, Omaha, NE 68137 Phone: 402-697-0811
Aldi
For the best everyday prices on basics, Aldi is hard to beat. You’ll find locations across Omaha, Bellevue, Papillion and Gretna (including Gretna Landing, right next to the Gretna Hy-Vee). Bring a quarter for the cart and your own bags, and don’t sleep on the weekly “Aldi Finds” aisle.
Another budget pick: Dollar Fresh Market, Hy-Vee’s discount grocery brand, at 8404 N 30th St in North Omaha. You get Hy-Vee products, including its store brands, at lower prices in a smaller, no-frills format.
Costco and Sam’s Club
Bulk shoppers have plenty of options. The metro now has three Costco warehouses:
- West Omaha: 12300 W Dodge Rd, Omaha, NE 68154
- La Vista: near Giles Road and Westport Parkway — the closest Costco to Offutt and most Sarpy County neighborhoods
- Northwest Omaha: 180th & West Maple, which opened in July 2024 with a larger gas station
Sam’s Club has locations in Omaha and Council Bluffs.
Walmart and Target
Both Walmart and Target have multiple stores around the metro with full grocery sections, including Bellevue locations close to the base. The Bellevue Walmart sits at 2109 Towne Center Dr, and Walmart also runs smaller Neighborhood Market grocery stores in the area. Many Target stores carry a full grocery selection, and all of them offer Drive Up pickup.
Whole Foods Market
Yes, Omaha has a Whole Foods. It’s located near 100th & Dodge, by Regency and Westroads Mall, and it’s the go-to spot for organic produce, specialty diets and a strong prepared-foods bar.
Address: 10020 Regency Circle, Omaha, NE 68114 Phone: 402-393-1200
Trader Joe’s
Trader Joe’s fans, you’re covered — though for now, you’ll be making a bit of a drive. Omaha’s only Trader Joe’s opened at One Pacific Place in 2010, just a short hop from Whole Foods, and it gets busy on weekends.
Address: 10305 Pacific St, Omaha, NE 68114 Phone: 402-391-3698
Help is on the way: Trader Joe’s filed a permit in April 2026 for a second Omaha store at 192nd & West Dodge in the new Avenue One development. No opening date has been announced yet.
International and Specialty Markets
Omaha’s international grocery scene surprises a lot of newcomers. A few favorites:
Asian Market — 321 N 76th St, Omaha. One of the largest international grocers in the city, with aisles organized by region and cuisine, a big fresh seafood and meat counter, and hard-to-find produce. There’s also a food court with noodle dishes and boba tea, so it’s easy to turn a grocery run into lunch.
Supermercado Nuestra Familia — authentic Hispanic grocery products, fresh produce and a meat counter, with three locations:
- 2900 Leavenworth St, Omaha, NE 68105
- 1826 Vinton St, Omaha, NE 68108
- 3548 Q St, Omaha, NE 68107
Omaha Oriental Food & Gifts — 84th & F St, Omaha. A Japanese-focused market and a favorite for sushi-grade fish, sushi supplies and Japanese pantry staples.
Patel Grocers — west Omaha (68144). An Indian grocery stocked with spices, herbs, lentils, rice, fresh produce, and traditional sweets and snacks.
Absolutely Fresh Seafood Market — 1218 S 119th St, Omaha. Fresh and frozen seafood in a landlocked city, and the place locals go for fish they can’t find at the big chains.
You’ll also find smaller independent Indian, African, Middle Eastern and European markets throughout the city, plus Natural Grocers for natural and organic staples.
Farmers Markets and Farm Stands
From May through October, nearly every community in the metro hosts a farmers market. Favorites include the Omaha Farmers Market in the Old Market on Saturdays and Aksarben Village on Sundays, plus the Bellevue Farmers Market in Washington Park, the closest to base. Add in seasonal farm stands from Bellevue to Elkhorn, and summer produce is never far away.
Coming Soon
Omaha keeps growing, and the grocery landscape is growing with it:
- Two new Baker’s Marketplaces in west Omaha (late 2026 and 2027)
- A second Trader Joe’s at Avenue One near 192nd & Dodge
- A new community grocery store in North Omaha near 25th & Lake, led by the nonprofit Heart Ministry Center, which held its groundbreaking in September 2026 — the neighborhood’s first full-service grocery store in decades
Tips for PCS and Relocating Families
- Mix and match. Most military families I work with use the commissary for the big weekly haul and a nearby Hy-Vee, Baker’s or Aldi for quick trips.
- Use pickup during move week. Commissary Click2Go, Hy-Vee Aisles Online and Walmart and Target pickup make the first few days much easier when you’re living out of boxes. More move-week tips are in my guide to a PCS move to Omaha.
- Sign up for fuel rewards. Hy-Vee, Baker’s and Costco all offer gas savings, and they add up with Omaha-area commutes.
- Factor stores into your home search. If a five-minute grocery run matters to you, it’s worth mapping stores before you pick a neighborhood. My guides to the best places to live near Offutt AFB and neighborhoods near Offutt are a good place to start.
