If you’re thinking about living in Gretna Nebraska, you probably picture three things: Vala’s Pumpkin Patch, Nebraska Crossing Outlets, and rows of brand-new homes stretching toward the horizon.
And to be fair…those are all part of Gretna.
But spend a day here, and you’ll quickly realize there’s much more to discover.
The largest Hy-Vee store in the country has become a destination all its own. A breathtaking glass chapel overlooking the Platte River Valley sits just minutes from Interstate 80, even though thousands of drivers pass it every day without stopping. Families cool off at one of the metro’s newest water parks, hike the trails at nearby Schramm Park, and spend Saturday mornings browsing one of the area’s most popular farmers markets.
Gretna has grown at an incredible pace over the past decade, but it has managed to keep the small-town charm that made people fall in love with it in the first place.
Whether you’re considering living in Gretna Nebraska, planning a weekend adventure, or simply looking for somewhere new to explore, here’s why this fast-growing community has become one of the best day trips around the Omaha metro.
Why Gretna Keeps Growing
There’s a reason Gretna is one of the fastest-growing communities in Nebraska.
Families are drawn by highly regarded schools, newer neighborhoods, and easy access to both Omaha and Lincoln via Interstate 80. At the same time, Gretna has managed to hold onto something many rapidly growing cities lose: it still feels like a community rather than just another suburb.
That balance is a big part of the appeal of living in Gretna Nebraska. You can spend the morning hiking at Schramm Park, grab lunch at one of the largest Hy-Vee stores you’ll ever visit, spend the afternoon shopping at Nebraska Crossing, and still make it home in time for dinner without fighting downtown traffic.
For those considering a move, Gretna also offers quick access to the rest of Sarpy County. Vala’s Pumpkin Patch
Long before Gretna became one of Nebraska’s fastest-growing communities, people were already making the drive here every fall.
That drive had a destination: Vala’s Pumpkin Patch.
If you’ve lived anywhere around Omaha for more than a few years, you’ve probably had the same conversation.
“It’s getting expensive.”
“It’s so crowded.”
“We should go during the week.”
And then…everyone goes anyway.
Every year people complain about the prices, they add new attractions, and the parking lots are full.
Love it or hate it, avoid it or buy your tickets the day they go on sale, there’s no denying Vala’s has become one of Nebraska’s signature attractions.
The reason is simple: it’s no longer just a pumpkin patch.
It’s a full-day experience.
Kids can spend hours climbing, jumping, riding, sliding, feeding animals, exploring corn mazes, and somehow still have enough energy to ask for one more ride before you leave. Meanwhile, adults have discovered that Vala’s has quietly become a bit of a foodie destination, with everything from apple cider donuts to the Apple Barn’s expanded menu drawing just as much excitement as the attractions themselves.
If you’re planning a visit, there are a few easy ways to save money. Buy tickets during the annual early bird presale (for 2026, that’s July 23-24), visit on a weekday when crowds are typically lighter, or consider evening admission if you don’t need a full day to explore.
Whether it’s your first visit or your fifteenth, Vala’s is one of those places that somehow manages to give you a different experience every year. And for many families, it’s become less of an annual outing and more of a tradition.
Nebraska Crossing: More Than Just Outlet Shopping
If your idea of outlet shopping is a handful of stores and a food court, Nebraska Crossing is going to surprise you.
Located just off Interstate 80, it’s home to more than 80 brand-name stores, along with restaurants, seasonal events, and plenty of places to take a break between shopping bags. Whether you’re hunting for a deal on athletic shoes, updating your wardrobe, or getting a jump on holiday shopping, it’s easy to spend an entire afternoon here.
One tip many first-time visitors don’t know about: download the Nebraska Crossing app before you arrive. It offers exclusive discounts, bonus savings, and special promotions that can help you stretch your budget even further. If you’re planning to do some serious shopping, it’s well worth the few minutes it takes to set up.
And military families, make sure you ask for the military discount. There are several stores (including Under Armour) that offer up to 20% military discounts.
The World’s Largest Hy-Vee
When someone told me Gretna was home to the world’s largest Hy-Vee, I figured, “Okay…it’s probably just a really big grocery store.”
I was wrong.
I expected a grocery store, and I left thinking if I had to do one of those YouTube challenges where I stayed in one building for 30 days, this would be my first choice.
Seriously.
The place just keeps going. There’s a Starbucks, an enormous pharmacy, a full floral department, a sports shop, an impressive liquor department, and enough prepared food options that you could visit multiple times without ordering the same thing twice.
If Hy-Vee makes it, it’s probably here.
Need groceries? Obviously. Looking for a bouquet on the way to a dinner party? Covered. Forgot a birthday gift? There’s a good chance you’ll find one. Hungry after a day of shopping at Nebraska Crossing? Skip the drive-thru and grab dinner here instead.
One of my favorite moments was wandering down the snack aisle and spotting Hostess Donettes in flavors I’d never seen before. It wasn’t exactly life-changing…but it was enough to make me realize this isn’t your average neighborhood grocery store.
Whether you’re running errands or just curious to see what all the fuss is about, the Gretna Hy-Vee is worth the stop. Even if you leave with a cart full of things you never intended to buy. (P.S. the jalapeno popper pasta salad is delicious.)
Gretna Crossing YMCA: One of the Metro’s Best Places to Beat the Heat
If you’re visiting Gretna during the summer, don’t overlook the Gretna Crossing YMCA.
The outdoor water park has become a favorite for local families thanks to its lazy river, water slides, splash areas for younger kids, and plenty of space to cool off on a hot Nebraska afternoon. Whether you’re entertaining toddlers or trying to keep older kids busy for a few hours, it’s easy to see why this place stays popular all summer long.
You don’t have to be a YMCA member to enjoy it, either. Day passes are available, making it a great option for families visiting the area or anyone wanting to check it out before committing to a membership.
Before my first visit, I asked local moms for their best advice. The overwhelming response? Get there before it opens if you want the best chairs and the shortest lines for the slides. By early afternoon, especially on weekends, things can get much busier.
It’s one of those places that’s easy to overlook if you’re not from Gretna—but once you discover it, you’ll probably find yourself coming back every summer.
Holy Family Shrine: Nebraska’s Most Beautiful Interstate Exit
Thousands of people drive past Holy Family Shrine every single day.
Most never take the exit.
That’s a shame, because they’re missing one of the most peaceful places in eastern Nebraska.
Just a few minutes off Interstate 80, Holy Family Shrine welcomes visitors of all faiths—or no faith at all. Admission is completely free, and your visit begins at a beautiful visitor center that shares the history of the shrine and the vision behind its construction.
What many people don’t realize is that the chapel standing today wasn’t the original plan.
During construction, the first chapel collapsed before it was completed. Rather than giving up, the project started over from the beginning, eventually creating the breathtaking glass sanctuary visitors experience today. Sunlight pours through the towering windows, creating a peaceful atmosphere that’s difficult to capture in photos but unforgettable in person.
After exploring the chapel, take a little extra time to wander the grounds.
A walking trail winds through native prairie grasses and seasonal wildflowers before opening to spectacular views of the Platte River Valley. On a quiet morning or just before sunset, it’s one of those places that makes you forget you’re only minutes from one of Nebraska’s busiest highways.
Whether you’re looking for a quiet place to reflect, stretch your legs during a road trip, or simply enjoy one of the most beautiful overlooks in the Omaha area, Holy Family Shrine is well worth the stop.

Schramm Park: An Outdoor Escape Just Minutes from Gretna
If you’re looking to trade shopping bags for hiking boots, Schramm Park is just a short drive from Gretna and well worth the trip.
The park offers something for just about everyone, whether you’re hiking wooded trails, letting the kids burn off energy at the playground, or spending the night in one of the cabins. It’s also home to Nebraska’s oldest fish hatchery, where visitors can learn about the state’s conservation efforts and see thousands of fish raised before they’re released into Nebraska waters.
One of the best parts of Schramm is that it never feels rushed. It’s the kind of place where you can pack a picnic, take your time on the trails, and enjoy a slower pace for an afternoon.
While nearby Mahoney State Park often gets most of the attention, Schramm deserves a spot on your summer bucket list. It’s a little quieter, a little less crowded, and one of those places that reminds you how much natural beauty exists just outside the Omaha metro.
Gretna Farmers Market: Worth Setting an Alarm For
If you find yourself in Gretna on a Saturday morning, make time for the Gretna Farmers Market.
I expected a handful of vendor tents.
I was wrong.
This thing is huge.
Held in downtown Gretna, the market has grown into one of the area’s most popular Saturday traditions. Local farmers, bakers, artisans, food vendors, and small businesses line the streets, creating the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to slow down, grab a coffee, and wander for a while.
It’s more than a place to buy fresh produce or homemade treats. It’s where neighbors catch up and visitors get a feel for the community that has made Gretna one of Nebraska’s fastest-growing cities.
Whether you’re filling a tote bag with local goodies or just soaking up the atmosphere, the Gretna Farmers Market is a great reminder that even as the city continues to grow, it hasn’t lost its small-town heart.
Gretna Public Schools: One of the Community’s Biggest Draws
Ask almost anyone why they chose Gretna, and chances are the schools will come up early in the conversation.
The Gretna Public Schools district has earned a strong reputation for academic excellence, dedicated teachers, and a wide variety of extracurricular opportunities. As the community has grown, so have the schools, with beautiful campuses and modern facilities designed to serve one of Nebraska’s fastest-growing districts.
Walking onto campus, it’s easy to see why families are drawn here. The buildings feel more like a college campus than a typical K-12 school, and the pride the community has in its schools is evident.
Whether you’re moving with young children or planning ahead for the future, the Gretna Public Schools district continues to be one of the biggest reasons families choose to call this community home.
Things You’ll Only Understand After Spending Time in Gretna
There are a few things you’ll discover once you’ve visited Gretna a time or two.
Your GPS might send you down a gravel road to get somewhere.
Seriously.
Gretna has grown so quickly that your GPS might send you down a gravel road before dropping you off at one of the area’s biggest attractions. It feels strange the first time…and completely normal after that.
Vala’s traffic is basically its own season.
Every fall, locals know exactly what that line of brake lights means.
Don’t be surprised if someone suggests meeting at Hy-Vee for dinner.
You’ll understand after your first visit.
Nebraska Crossing isn’t “just” an outlet mall.
It’s become one of those places where people shop, grab dinner, attend events, and somehow spend half the day.
A Few Honest Things to Know
Gretna is growing…fast.
In fact, it sometimes feels like every time you visit, there’s a new neighborhood, a new business, or a sign announcing another major development coming soon.
That growth has brought plenty of positives, but it also comes with a few tradeoffs. Construction is a constant, traffic is heavier than it was just a few years ago, and home prices have climbed as more families discover everything Gretna has to offer.
The good news? Much of that construction is building the roads, businesses, and amenities needed to support the community’s rapid growth.
For many people, it’s a small price to pay for living in one of the most desirable communities in the Omaha metro.
Is Living in Gretna Nebraska Right for You?
Living in Gretna Nebraska isn’t just about buying a house.
It’s about Saturday mornings at the farmers market, afternoons floating the lazy river at the YMCA, grabbing dinner at a Hy-Vee that’s somehow become a destination of its own, and discovering places like Holy Family Shrine that many people drive past without ever stopping.
It’s also about living in a community that’s growing at an incredible pace while still finding ways to hold onto its small-town roots. Sure, you’ll encounter construction. You might sit in Vala’s traffic for a little longer than you’d like. And your GPS may occasionally decide a gravel road is the best route.
But that’s Gretna.
It’s a community that’s still being built, and for many families, that’s part of the excitement.
If you’re thinking about making a move and wondering whether Gretna is the right fit, I’d be happy to answer your questions, show you around the area, and help you explore the neighborhoods that match your lifestyle.
After all, finding the right home is important—but finding the right community is what makes it feel like home.
