Sports in Omaha during the College World Series with Charles Schwab Field, downtown Omaha skyline, and the CWS Ferris wheel at night

If you’ve ever driven into downtown during the College World Series, you’ve seen it firsthand. Traffic slows, the Ferris wheel lights up the skyline, Charles Schwab Field fills with fans, and Omaha becomes the center of the college baseball world.

But the College World Series is only the beginning when it comes to sports in Omaha.

Whether you’re a die-hard football fan, a hockey enthusiast, a soccer supporter, a volleyball fanatic, or simply looking for a fun family outing, Omaha offers far more sports opportunities than many newcomers expect. From nationally recognized college programs to professional teams and major sporting events, sports are woven into the fabric of life here.

The College World Series

No discussion of sports in Omaha would be complete without the College World Series.

The CWS has been held in Omaha since 1950, first at Rosenblatt Stadium and now at Charles Schwab Field (formerly TD Ameritrade park.) The tournament moved to its current home in 2011 and is contracted to remain in Omaha through at least 2035.

For two weeks every June, the city transforms. Hotels fill up, restaurants are packed, and fans from across the country descend on Omaha. For many local businesses, College World Series season is one of the most important times of the year.

For locals, the event is part sporting event and part tradition. Some people avoid downtown altogether during CWS season. Others make annual trips to Fan Fest, catch a game, or stop by Rocco’s for the famous Jell-O shot competition.

Longtime residents still remember the Rosenblatt days, when homeowners would turn their front yards into parking lots and make extra income from visiting fans. Today, a miniature version of Rosenblatt still stands near the zoo, complete with original stadium seats.

The College World Series Village

While the games may be the main attraction, many visitors spend just as much time exploring the College World Series Village outside Charles Schwab Field.

During the tournament, downtown Omaha transforms into a baseball fan’s paradise. Vendors, food stands, merchandise tents, sponsor exhibits, and interactive activities fill the area surrounding the stadium, creating an atmosphere that feels more like a baseball festival than a sporting event.

For youth baseball players, the Village can be just as exciting as the games themselves. Hundreds of young athletes descend on downtown Omaha each year hoping to get their hands on the latest equipment and apparel. Major brands like Rawlings, Easton, and Baseballism often have a presence, while Omaha-based Soldier Sports has become a local favorite with its popular Soldier Tank bats.

Whether you’re shopping for a new glove, checking out the newest bat technology, collecting memorabilia, or simply soaking in the atmosphere, the College World Series Village has become a tradition of its own for many families.

Even without a game ticket, spending an afternoon walking through the Village is one of the most unique sports experiences Omaha has to offer.

CHI Health Center and Major Sporting Events

One reason sports in Omaha continue to thrive is CHI Health Center Omaha.

Located in the heart of downtown, the arena serves as the home court for Creighton men’s basketball and the Omaha Supernovas. But its impact extends far beyond local teams.

Over the years, CHI Health Center has hosted NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games, NCAA Volleyball Championships, wrestling championships, and numerous other national sporting events. In 2024, March Madness returned to Omaha, and the city is already scheduled to host NCAA Tournament games again in 2027.

For many sports fans, the most memorable events may have been the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials. Omaha hosted the nationally televised event four consecutive times, transforming the arena into a world-class aquatic venue and giving local fans the opportunity to watch future Olympians compete for a spot on Team USA. Olympic legends such as Michael Phelps competed in Omaha during the Trials, creating unforgettable moments for local sports fans.

While the 2024 Trials moved to Indianapolis, Omaha’s successful history of hosting major events continues to make it a strong candidate for future national competitions.

Omaha Storm Chasers

Baseball fans don’t have to wait until June to enjoy the game.

The Omaha Storm Chasers are the Triple-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals and play at Werner Park in Papillion.

One of the best things about Storm Chasers games is how accessible they are. Fans often have opportunities to get autographs after games, and many future Major League players pass through Omaha on their way to Kansas City. Established Major League players frequently make rehab appearances here as well.

Werner Park is one of the most family-friendly venues in the metro. Kids can enjoy the playground area, bounce houses, wiffle ball field, basketball court, carousel, and other activities while parents enjoy the game. Many locals love the berm seating, where you can spread out a blanket and watch the action from the grass.

There truly isn’t a bad seat in the house.

Union Omaha

Soccer has exploded in popularity throughout the United States, and Omaha has its own championship-winning club.

Union Omaha competes in USL League One and has quickly established itself as one of the most successful clubs in the league. The team has won multiple league championships and built a passionate fan base known for creating an energetic match-day atmosphere.

Currently, Union Omaha plays home matches at Werner Park, but the club has announced plans for a new soccer-specific stadium in North Downtown near Charles Schwab Field, scheduled to open in 2028.

If you’ve never attended a professional soccer match, Union Omaha provides an affordable and exciting introduction to the sport.

Omaha Supernovas

One of the newest additions to sports in Omaha has become one of the city’s biggest success stories.

The Omaha Supernovas compete in the Pro Volleyball Federation and represent Omaha’s first major professional women’s sports franchise.

Given Nebraska’s long-standing love affair with volleyball, it’s no surprise the team has found an enthusiastic audience. Volleyball crowds in Nebraska routinely rank among the largest in the nation, and the Supernovas have quickly become a major attraction at CHI Health Center.

Whether you’re already a volleyball fan or simply curious about the excitement surrounding the sport, a Supernovas match is worth experiencing.

Omaha Lancers

Hockey may not be the first sport people associate with Nebraska, but the Omaha Lancers have been a local favorite for decades.

The Lancers compete in the United States Hockey League (USHL) and play at Liberty First Credit Union Arena in Ralston.

The players are among the top young hockey prospects in the country, many of whom will continue their careers at major college programs and beyond.

Games are fast-paced, affordable, and family friendly. The arena offers excellent sightlines, making every seat a good one.

Omaha Beef

For fans looking for something a little different, the Omaha Beef offer indoor football action at Liberty First Credit Union Arena.

Arena football brings a unique experience with a smaller field, faster pace, and plenty of scoring. The atmosphere is energetic, family friendly, and often surprisingly affordable compared to larger professional sporting events.

College Sports in the Omaha metro

College athletics play a major role in Omaha’s sports culture.

Creighton University

Creighton sports attract passionate fans throughout the region, particularly men’s basketball.

Bluejay basketball games at CHI Health Center routinely draw large crowds and create one of the best sports atmospheres in Omaha. Creighton also fields competitive programs in baseball, soccer, volleyball, and several other sports.

University of Nebraska Omaha

UNO athletics continue to grow in popularity, particularly hockey.

The Mavericks compete at the Division I level and offer fans opportunities to enjoy hockey, basketball, baseball, soccer, and more throughout the year.

For many families, both Creighton and UNO provide affordable opportunities to enjoy high-level college sports close to home.

Bellevue University Athletics

While Bellevue University may not receive the same attention as Nebraska, Creighton, or UNO, local sports fans shouldn’t overlook the Bruins.

Bellevue University competes in the NAIA and fields teams in basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, golf, and several other sports. The university has built a strong tradition of athletic success, particularly in baseball, where the Bruins have earned multiple national tournament appearances.

One of the hidden gems for local sports fans is Bruins basketball. Games offer an up-close experience that can be hard to find at larger schools, allowing fans to sit close to the action while enjoying a fun and affordable night out.

For military families stationed at Offutt Air Force Base, Bellevue University athletics offer another unique benefit. Active-duty military members can attend many athletic events free of charge, making Bruins games an easy and budget-friendly way to support local sports.

For newcomers to the area, Bellevue University is a reminder that sports opportunities extend well beyond Omaha’s biggest venues and most recognizable teams.

Husker Sports

While Lincoln is about 45 minutes away, Nebraska Cornhuskers athletics are very much part of life in Omaha.

Of course, Husker football is known nationwide. Memorial Stadium regularly sells out and is often referred to as Nebraska’s third-largest city on game days because of the more than 85,000 fans in attendance.

But football isn’t the only attraction.

Nebraska volleyball has become a national powerhouse and regularly draws record-breaking crowds. Basketball, baseball, softball, wrestling, and numerous other sports enjoy strong support throughout the state.

Many Omaha residents make frequent trips to Lincoln during the school year to cheer on the Huskers.

Professional Sports Near Omaha

One advantage of living in Omaha is easy access to major professional sports in nearby Kansas City.

Located roughly two and a half to three hours away, Kansas City makes an easy day trip or weekend getaway for sports fans.

  • Kansas City Chiefs (NFL)
  • Kansas City Royals (MLB)
  • Sporting Kansas City (MLS)
  • Kansas City Current (NWSL)
  • Kansas City Mavericks (ECHL Hockey)
  • Kansas City Comets (Indoor Soccer)

It’s not uncommon to meet Omaha residents who hold season tickets for Kansas City teams, especially the Chiefs.

Youth Sports in Omaha

Beyond spectator sports, Omaha is a youth sports powerhouse.

Families will find opportunities for baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, football, hockey, wrestling, basketball, swimming, martial arts, and nearly every other sport imaginable.

Weekend tournaments frequently bring visitors from across the Midwest, and many local families spend a significant portion of their year attending practices, games, tournaments, and competitions.

For parents considering a move to the area, there is no shortage of opportunities for kids to stay active and involved.

Sports Camps and Clinics

One of the advantages of living in the Omaha area is access to sports camps and clinics hosted by local colleges and universities.

Throughout the year, organizations such as Creighton University, Bellevue University, UNO, and Nebraska offer camps for young athletes in basketball, baseball, volleyball, soccer, softball, and other sports. These camps give kids the opportunity to learn from college coaches and athletes while developing their skills in a fun environment.

Whether your child is trying a sport for the first time or hoping to compete at a higher level, there are opportunities available throughout the metro.

Why Sports Fans Love Living in Omaha

One of the things that makes sports in Omaha unique is the variety.

Few cities of Omaha’s size can offer a combination of nationally recognized college athletics, professional soccer, professional volleyball, minor league baseball, hockey, arena football, youth sports opportunities, and easy access to major professional teams.

Whether you’re cheering for the College World Series, spending a summer evening at Werner Park, supporting Union Omaha, watching the Supernovas, or making the short drive to Lincoln or Kansas City, there is always a game worth attending.

For sports fans, Omaha offers much more than many people expect—and that’s one more reason so many people love calling it home.

Justin helped make our military move amazing. He was attentive, professional, and personable. Justin was prompt with showing us all the houses we wanted to see. We also felt we could trust his advice. He pointed out potential problems and was patient as we looked for just the right place to call home. It was great to work with someone who understands the military life and the Omaha area.

Justin has managed a rental property we were in. He did a great job going above and beyond to resolve an electrical issue we had. He had to go back and forth with the warranty company on a dryer and the electrician. He got it resolved quickly with very little input from us. Great guy!

Great rental property manager to work with! He manages our rentals and we very seldom have issues, compared to our previous agent. We LOVE his flat-rate monthly pricing structure! Thanks Justin!

We couldn't have asked for a better realtor! Incredibly accommodating and responsive, always keeping us informed every step of the way. Buying a home from long distance could have been stressful, but Justin made the entire process smooth and enjoyable. As a veteran family, we especially appreciated his knowledge of the VA home-buying process and his commitment to serving those who have served. We highly recommend Justin to anyone looking for a trustworthy, hardworking realtor who truly goes above and beyond to help you find your perfect home!

Relocating across the country while on active duty can be stressful, but Justin made the home-buying process effortless. From the start, he understood the unique challenges of a military PCS and went above and beyond what we ever expected. We completed our entire closing remotely, and Justin handled every detail to make it seamless. Even after closing, his support didn't stop. Since we couldn't be there right away, Justin personally installed our garden hoses and set up our automatic sprinkler system to keep our new lawn healthy until we arrived. He also connected us with trusted contractors so we could begin home improvement projects before moving in, saving us valuable time. As if that wasn't enough, he even received one of my vehicles after it was shipped, giving us one less thing to worry about during an already hectic cross-country move. Those aren't things a realtor is expected to do—they're things someone does because they genuinely care about their clients. Justin didn't just help us buy a house; he helped our family make a smooth transition to a new community. His professionalism, communication, local knowledge, and willingness to go above and beyond are second to none. If you're looking for a realtor who will advocate for you, treat you like family, and continue supporting you long after closing day, I can't recommend Justin highly enough. Thank you for Everything you did for our family—we truly appreciate it.

Cannot recommend Justin enough. As first time buyers he patiently walked us through the process along with all of our questions. Being a military family, we had to close sight unseen (nerve racking to say the least), but he ensured every last detail was addressed before we stepped foot in our home. Justin is an expert, well connected in the greater Omaha community, and above all trustworthy .

Justin was an excellent realtor for us. He showed us probably dozens of homes, and was with us and supportive every step of the way. He was there to assist us in navigating when our first deal fell through, helping us deal with the process and some extremely unprofessional agents. He is very knowledgeable and helpful and I cannot recommend him enough, especially if you are military looking to buy in the area, or a veteran looking to find your forever home.
