If you’re planning a Lake of the ozarks family vacation, you’re headed to one of the Midwest’s most unique destinations, both for its scenery and its story. The Lake of the Ozarks is a 90-mile-long lake shaped like a winding snake, but it wasn’t always here. It was once the Osage River, flowing through the Missouri hills. In 1931, the river was dammed to create a massive reservoir for hydroelectric power, giving us the sprawling lake and countless coves we enjoy today.
If you’ve watched the Netflix series Ozark, you might remember the fictional Snell family losing their land when the lake was created. Don’t worry, your vacation won’t involve money laundering or cartel meetings (hopefully). The Snells were pure fiction, but like all the best stories, the show’s drama was rooted in a bit of truth about the lake’s history.
Since then, the Lake of the Ozarks has become a favorite getaway for boating, fishing, swimming, and exploring. It’s perfect for families, couples, and groups of friends. After four summers of visiting, I’ve pulled together my personal favorites so you can plan a trip full of adventure and relaxation.

On the Water: Quiet Coves & Boating Adventures
A Lake of the ozarks family vacation isn’t complete without a day (or three) on the water. Skip the notorious Party Cove and head for peaceful coves to swim, float, fish, or jet ski.
Don’t own a boat? You’ve got options. Book a charter with a captain, rent for the day, or stay at an Airbnb with its own dock. Services like Leisure Lake Charters, Captain Bob’s, or Mike Fink’s Marina will even pick you up from your resort dock.
Beach Days & State Park Escapes
Captain Ron’s – MM 34.5
One of the rare beach-access spots on the lake. Perfect for kids with a roped-off swim area and a restaurant so you can stay all day.
Lake of the Ozarks State Park
Two public swimming beaches, hiking and biking trails, horseback riding, cabins, and yurts. A great balance of lake time and on-shore adventure.
Ha Ha Tonka State Park
Castle ruins from the early 1900s, caves, sinkholes, a natural bridge, and bluff-top views of the lake. Bring your camera and your hiking shoes.
Restaurants & Pools with a View
LandShark at Margaritaville – MM 26
Hands down, my favorite place on the lake. Kid-friendly, boat-accessible, with a laid-back vibe and gorgeous views. Kids get a splash pool with a waterfall and slides, while adults enjoy the swim-up bar pool.
Dog Daze – MM 19
Two separate pools, one for kids and one for adults, make this a great family stop, especially by boat taxi or charter.
Backwater Jacks – MM 17.5
Massive swim-up bar, sunny lounging decks. Best suited for adults looking for a lively atmosphere.
The Cave – MM 3 (Niangua Channel)
Part swim-up bar, part lazy river, part actual cave. This spot keeps kids entertained and adults relaxed.
High Tide – MM 21
Next to Redhead Lakeside Grill, this pool-club vibe is more adult-focused, but worth visiting for food and drinks.
Lake Burger – MM 4 (Gravois Arm)
Recommended by part-time local Lynette Arrasmith – come for the burgers, stay for the three water slides and lazy river.
Big Dick’s Halfway Inn – MM 47
Known for its infamous “minnow shots”. A live minnow in a shot glass. Not for everyone, but definitely a memorable stop.
Fun Off the Water
- Pirate’s Cove Mini Golf (Osage Beach) – A well-designed themed course that’s genuinely fun.
- The Malted Monkey (Bagnell Dam Strip) – Zipline course plus ice cream for a quick break.
- Bagnell Dam Strip Shopping – Souvenirs, T-shirts, Christmas ornaments—touristy, but you’re a tourist, so enjoy it.
- Stewart’s Restaurant – Giant cinnamon rolls big enough for 4–6 people.
Getting Around Without Driving Yourself
One of the best ways to maximize a Lake of the ozarks family vacation is to let someone else drive the boat. Popular options include:
- Playin Hooky Water Taxi – Group bar-hop cruises or private transport.
- Lake Ozark Water Taxi – Bagnell Dam to MM 14, dog-friendly, mobile pay.
- Leisure Lake Charters – Full-day private outings.
- Captain Bob’s Boat Rental & Charter – Picks up from your dock, flexible itineraries.
- Celebration Cruises – Large, ADA-accessible yacht cruises.
Where to Stay
We love WorldMark by Wyndham in Osage Beach. Family-friendly, condo rentals, pools, and a dock so you can get picked up for your lake day right from your doorstep.
