Whether you’re a military family new to the area or just someone who’s always wondered if it’s worth the drive, here’s the scoop: the Wisconsin Dells is known as the waterpark capital of the world. It’s just a 7-hour road trip from Omaha, and packed with enough activities to keep both kids and adults entertained for days.

Hey there! I’m Alison, and I’m writing this blog for Justin Ogburn’s audience to give you a firsthand, no-fluff rundown of what a real Wisconsin Dells vacation is like. We’ve been making the trip up north for years, and I’m sharing what’s worth your time, what surprised us (in good and bad ways), and how to make the most of your trip—without needing a personal concierge or a second mortgage.

If you’re planning a Wisconsin Dells vacation, learn from us: check your reservation dates. This year’s trip started with a bang—the kind where you show up to your resort and find out you’re 24 hours early. Whoops.

After last year’s forgotten purse fiasco (I left it in the Dubuque Hardee’s, 2 hours away, forcing an extra 4 hour roadtrip when we got there), I was determined to keep things running smoothly this time around. And to be fair, we did remember everything…except the check-in date.

Luckily, we found a hotel nearby for the night, and when we finally stepped into our roomy two-bedroom condo the next day—with a full kitchen and plenty of space to spread out—it felt like we’d earned that little slice of heaven. Bonus: we accidentally gave ourselves an extra day of vacation. So hey, no complaints.

Here’s what we checked out this time on our Wisconsin Dells vacation—and whether we’d recommend it.

Land of Natura: Worth the Hype?

Land of Natura is one of the newest outdoor attractions in the Dells, and it really does feel like you’re stepping into a tropical hideaway—if you ignore the Wisconsin chill in early June. The water was ice-cold (as expected), but the scenery was beautiful and the layout felt fresh and open.

The highlight for us was renting a paddleboard and getting an unexpected mini-lesson from one of the employees, who went above and beyond to help me stand up and balance for the first time. Big shout-out to her—it turned a maybe into a memory.

There’s also a huge inflatable obstacle course on the lake, plus a treetop walking course that gives you amazing views—if you’re okay with heights and a little wobble. It wasn’t the easiest to find, but it added to the adventure.

Pro tip: Buy your tickets online in advance. It saved us a good chunk of change.

Hot Dog Avenue: A Simple, Delicious Break

Hot Dog Avenue doesn’t try to be fancy—and that’s what makes it great. It’s classic Chicago-style food in a no-frills spot right near Noah’s Ark and Mt. Olympus.

Between our group, we tried the Chicago Dog, Italian beef, a burger, cheese fries—you name it. Everything hit the spot, and it was fast, affordable, and friendly. Tucked in with all the vintage roadside motels, it felt like stepping back in time in the best possible way.

If you’re looking for an easy, satisfying lunch during your Wisconsin Dells vacation, this is a great choice.

Our Favorites From Past Trips

Ghost Boat: Not for Little Kids

This one took us by surprise. What starts as a peaceful nighttime boat ride along the river turns into a full-on haunted house experience. Once the boat docks, you’re guided through a canyon path filled with fog machines, costumed actors, and jump scares galore. It’s creative and immersive—but definitely not for young kids. We had one child love it and another begging to leave. If you enjoy haunted houses and creepy woods, it’s a must-try. Just check the website beforehand so you know what you’re walking into!An eerie nighttime boat ride through the woods with actors, fog, and plenty of jump scares. A fun haunted experience for older kids and teens—but skip it if your little ones scare easily.

Wisconsin Ducks Tour: A Must-Do

The Wisconsin Ducks are one of the most iconic experiences in the Dells—and for good reason. These amphibious WWII vehicles take you on a bumpy ride through forests and over water, all while your guide dishes out fun facts, dad jokes, and Dells history. The splashdowns are a blast, and the scenery is surprisingly beautiful. It’s fun for all ages, educational without being boring, and a rite of passage for first-timers.These WWII-era vehicles drive on land and water and give you a tour packed with history and scenery. Everyone in our group loved it.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not!: Surprisingly Engaging

What could’ve been a 10-minute walk-through museum ended up being one of our more interactive stops—thanks to the scavenger hunt. It turns the quirky exhibits (think portraits made of dog hair or pills) into a full-blown adventure. Kids love discovering hidden passageways, and the free popcorn at the end is a fun bonus. A little overpriced without the game, but totally worth it if you do the hunt.Skip the overpriced museum feel and go straight for the scavenger hunt. It turns this quirky collection into an interactive adventure. Bonus: free popcorn next door afterward!

Kalahari Waterpark: Upscale, But Mixed Bag

Kalahari is fancy, no doubt about it. The resort looks great, the lobby smells like spa air, and Tom Foolerys—its massive arcade and indoor amusement park—is top notch. But the waterpark itself? Meh. For the price (and yes, you’ll pay a lot), we expected a little more wow. The wave pool was underwhelming and the slides a bit tame for thrill seekers. If you’re staying at the resort, go for it. If you’re buying a day pass, know what you’re paying for.Great arcade and activities at Tom Foolerys, but the waterpark itself was crowded and underwhelming for the price. Stay onsite if you go—it’s the only way to make it make sense.

Wilderness Resort: Our Home Base

This is our Dells home. With multiple indoor and outdoor waterparks, a full kitchen, and room to stretch out, the Wilderness is where we stay every time. It has something for every age and daredevil level—from baby splash zones to towering slides. The wave pool has a glass roof, which is especially nice if the weather’s dreary. Bonus: their activity pass gives you access to go-karts, mini golf, ropes courses, and more. It’s big, it’s busy, but it works. Multiple indoor and outdoor waterparks, a full kitchen in the condo, and enough activities to keep everyone busy. It’s where we stay every time—and we recommend it.

Noah’s Ark: Our Favorite Waterpark

This is the crown jewel of outdoor waterparks in the Dells. The slides are color-coded by intensity (hallelujah), the wave pool is massive, and there are actual swimming pools if you just want to float. Food is pricey, parking isn’t free, but the experience is top-tier. The Raja is their signature ride, and I tried it this year. It was a blast! Look it up on YouTube first if you’re nervous. There’s a water coaster that rivals anything we’ve tried elsewhere, and they also have the popular Flo-Rider for surfing. It’s our favorite park for good reason. Huge wave pool, great variety of slides, and labeled intensity levels (thank you!). This is the one we keep coming back to.

Mt. Olympus: Retro Charm, Big Slides

We didn’t hit Mt. Olympus this year, but we’ve got our eye on it. It’s got a full outdoor theme park included with your stay, and it’s home to Icarus—the tallest tube slide in the country. If you’re a thrill ride fan, this is your place. The retro motels that make up the property scream old-school Dells charm. Just be aware that the waterpark is very weather dependent, and indoor options are limited outside the off-season.Didn’t make it this year, but it’s on the list. Tallest tube slide in the country, a full theme park, and a rotating waterslide (what?!) included if you stay onsite.

Buffalo Phil’s: Gimmicky but Fun

The food is delivered by train. Need I say more? Actually, yes, because the prices will hit you like a freight train too. This is one of those places you go for the experience, not the cuisine. LEGO villages, a western vibe, and excited kids make it a must-visit at least once. We usually split a pizza and call it good. Be prepared for slow service during peak hours, and keep an eye on the souvenir shop, it’s sneaky tempting.Your food comes by train. The kids love it. The parents grumble about the prices. Worth doing once.

Knuckleheads: Indoor Fun Option

Tucked next to Buffalo Phil’s, Knuckleheads is a bit of a wildcard. It’s got rides, bowling, a trampoline park, and arcade games—but it feels more like a fun center than a polished resort attraction. We’ve had a good time here, especially with younger kids who aren’t quite ready for big slides or coasters. Go for the unlimited wristband if you want to try it all, and skip the food unless you’re desperate. Not as polished as Tom Foolerys, but still a solid backup plan for rainy days.

Take Flight: Short But Memorable

Take Flight is one of those things that sounds a little gimmicky but actually delivers. It’s a full sensory ride that lifts your seat and immerses you in sweeping aerial footage on a giant screen. Think Soarin’ at Disney, but with Midwestern flair. It’s over pretty quickly, but everyone in our group agreed it was worth doing once—especially if you’re already staying at the Wilderness.A flying simulator with a massive screen. Great visuals. Feels real. Just wish it lasted longer.

Moosejaw Pizza: Good Food, Tourist Prices

We never skip Moosejaw when we’re in the Dells. The beer bread is a must, the pizza is reliably great, and the atmosphere is casual and fun. This year we ventured off-menu and regretted it—so stick to what they’re known for. And yes, they really do give you free moose antler hats. A little overpriced? Sure. But it’s part of the experience, and sometimes that’s what vacation’s about.Pizza, beer, and beer bread = win. Skip the entrees. And yes, you get to wear a free moose hat.

Outlets at The Dells: A Great Way to Take a Break

If your crew needs a breather from the water, the Outlets at The Dells is a surprisingly great place to reset. It’s a solid-sized outlet mall with a variety of recognizable brands—from athletic gear and shoes to outerwear and accessories. You’ll find stores like Nike, Adidas, New Balance, Crocs, and Rally House all in one spot.

It’s the kind of place where you can let everyone scatter for a bit, grab a coffee, and regroup without a wet towel in sight. Perfect for rainy days, colder afternoons, or just when you’ve hit your limit on chlorine and crowds. My son scored two basketball jerseys and declared it his favorite part of the trip—go figure!

Devil’s Lake State Park: Nature Break

Need a break from the chlorinated chaos? Drive 20 minutes to Devil’s Lake. It’s gorgeous, peaceful, and feels like a totally different world. There are hiking trails, picnic spots, kayak rentals, and plenty of space to relax. It’s the kind of place where kids can run and adults can breathe. We recommend going on a weekday if you want it a little quieter—it gets packed on weekends. A quick drive from The Dells. Breathtaking lake, trails, kayaking, and clean beaches. Perfect for escaping the crowds.

Absolutely. It’s part chaotic, part charming, and always packed with something to do. Even when things don’t go exactly as planned (and they rarely do), a Wisconsin Dells vacation is still time well spent.
